About Finance & Business Economics

DeGroote’s PhD in Finance provides you with the opportunity to work with leading researchers on issues in corporate finance, capital markets, derivatives, and other topics critical to the finance profession. Through mentoring, coursework and a wide variety of research and teaching opportunities, you will learn the craft of academic finance research.  

The finance specialization is designed for  students with a solid master’s level training in finance, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering, or related subjects. It’s suited for students who wish to pursue academic careers or research-related opportunities in the financial industry or the public sector. 

Strong quantitative skills are required.

Students are also required to take one additional 700-level course in business, economics or mathematics. The specific course will be determined in consultation with your supervisor. 

Amir Akbari

Dr. Amir Akbari received his Ph.D. in Finance from McGill University. His main research interests include Empirical Asset Pricing, International Finance, Institutional Investing, and Financial Econometrics. His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals such as The Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Empirical Finance. 

Amir Akbari

Yan Wang

Dr. Yan Wang received her M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in Finance from McGill University. Her research interests lie in the areas of price fragility, institutional investment, and empirical corporate finance. Her current research focuses on four themes: (i) the effect of price fragility on institutional trading behavior, capital markets, and corporate decisions, (ii) the informational role of informed financial agents in financial markets, (iii) the competitive effects of corporate decisions, and (iv) the interplay between labor market dynamics and corporate decisions

Yoontae Jeon

Dr. Yoontae Jeon received his Ph.D. in Finance from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. His main research interests include Derivatives, Information in Financial Markets, Cryptocurrency, and Financial Econometrics. His current research focuses on extracting information embedded in financial derivatives products.
